Types of Boring Methods to Consider When Doing Soil Exploration

by Frank Elliott

When doing soil exploration, you may opt to go for boring methods rather than direct soil exploration methods especially when exploring at greater depths. For most people, the methods that they prefer is dictated by a desire to get either disturbed and undisturbed soil samples or both. However, when choosing the methods of boring during soil exploration, you need to consider the materials to be encountered, the likely disturbances to the material being sampled and relative efficiency of the boring methods. Here are some of the boring methods that you can consider.

Wash Boring

Most contractors prefer the wash boring method because of the limited availability of the equipment. Normally, it is the cheapest method to do boring. During this process, a hole is first created on the ground to allow the soil sampling and rock drilling to be done below the hole. The hole is dug deeper through chopping and twisting using a light bit. Without taking into consideration the depth of open hole created, this kind of boring can cover up to a depth of 10 meters.

Auger Boring

As a contractor, you should consider this method of boring as it is fast and economical. The economical essence of the method is because it uses simple and relatively cheaper instruments to bore both large and small holes. When you are determining the ground water table, you need to consider this method. Additionally, it is ideal when exploring soft to stiff cohesive soils. If you want to remove soil disturbed then this is the right method for you. In instances where you are boring cemented soils and those that are categorized as very hard then you need not use this method. It is best suited for soils that are less saturated.

Displacement Boring

This is a dual type of boring that involve both sampling and boring operation. During this process, a combination of the sampler, slit cup and piston are forced to penetrate the ground to the required depth. After forcing the combination deep, the sampler is left down the soil while the piston is withdrawn. After taking the soil sample, the sampler is removed and soil samples taken for lab analysis. It is advisable to use this type of boring in stiff and dense soil and do it progressively to avoid the damage of the sampler.

When you have a contract to do soil exploration, you can consider employing one of the above methods. For each of them, there is a relative advantage that stands out. Make your boring work easy through the right method.

About Me

Calling in the Contractors

Hello! My name is Andy and I have recently finished building my dream home by the ocean. I have always loved swimming and surfing in the sea so the idea of living by the beach has always appealed to me. I used to live in a small apartment but I worked hard and saved as much cash as I could. By the time I reached the age of 47, I finally had the funds to build my dream home. I called in a team of construction contractors who built my house. They were really great guys and I picked up a lot of knowledge during the months they were working with me. I will share some of the knowledge here.
