5 Signs You Should Have a Professional Do Your Asbestos Removal

by Frank Elliott

If you like DIY work, you may be interested in removing asbestos from your home, business or investment property, and with the right safety precautions, this can be possible. However, there are key reasons you should not tackle this particular job on your own. Here are five signs you should call in the pros.

1. You Don't Want to Be in Danger

Asbestos is extremely dangerous, and when inhaled, it can lead to mesothelioma. Many people erroneously assume that you can only get affected if you're exposed to it on a repeated basis, but that is not the case.

Your risk is heightened, and you're more likely to have effects from repeated exposure. However, even if you are just exposed a single time, the fibres can get into your lungs. They can stay in there and lead to scarring or other issues.

2. You Don't Want to Spend a Bunch of Money on Safety Equipment

To safely work with asbestos, you need a respirator. That prevents you from inhaling the fibres. You also need a full suit to cover your regular clothing, and you need plastic to prevent the asbestos from getting out.

When you are done working, you have to take care to remove your clothing in your work space. Then, you can either throw out the clothing or take it directly to the washing machine, but in both cases, you have to be very careful that you don't accidentally drop the fibres somewhere.

3. You Don't Like Working in Bulky Safety Gear

Even if you don't mind spending money on safety gear, working in it can be awkward. Breathing through a respirator is hard to get used to, and the clothing can be heavy and hot. If you don't want to deal with that, you may also want to contact a professional.

4. You Don't Want to Arrange Pick Up

If you don't mind all the risks and annoyances listed above, you may want to go forward with the asbestos removal project. However, there is one additional issue to think about — you have to arrange pick up for the asbestos. You can't just put it in the rubbish, and sneaking it into the landfill is illegal.

5. You Want to Save Time

Finally, as with any DIY project you have to think about your time. If you would rather devote your time to other activities, that's another sign that you should call in the pros. They can handle the asbestos removal quickly and safely.

About Me

Calling in the Contractors

Hello! My name is Andy and I have recently finished building my dream home by the ocean. I have always loved swimming and surfing in the sea so the idea of living by the beach has always appealed to me. I used to live in a small apartment but I worked hard and saved as much cash as I could. By the time I reached the age of 47, I finally had the funds to build my dream home. I called in a team of construction contractors who built my house. They were really great guys and I picked up a lot of knowledge during the months they were working with me. I will share some of the knowledge here.
