Finding the Suitable Metal Roofing Material for Your Home

by Frank Elliott

Are you the verge of replacing your roof or you are contemplating upgrading your home in the near future? Well, roofing is one of the major decision points you have to consider. The roofing industry has been at the forefront in coming up with different types of roofing designs and materials including asphalt shingles, wood, and metal. Each of these materials have their own strength and weaknesses, but metal roofing has a clear edge over the rest. For instance, asphalt shingles and wood last approximately 15 to 20 years, while metal roofing can serve you for 7 decades and more. When you come to maintenance, metal roofing doesn't give you as much headache as the rest of the roof types because your main concern will be clearing of debris, replacing old gaskets, touching up paint, and keeping your gutters clean. When you add these advantages to the fact that metal roofs are recyclable, deciding on the roofing type to invest in should not be difficult.

Types of Metal Roofing Materials One of the things you will have to contend with is that deciding on metal roofing is not a simple task. This is because metal roofing doesn't refer to a specific product, but rather a whole range of products made from different kinds of metals. To help you in making up your mind, below are some of the common metal roofing materials to consider.

Copper Roofing This material has been used for centuries on end around the globe. With a lifespan of more than 200 years when installed in ideal environments, copper roofs have also been found to be fully recyclable. In terms of strength, copper is a soft metal and one of the quietest metal roofing types. That said, copper roofing cannot withstand abuse and therefore installing it in hail-prone regions can easily lower its aesthetic value.

Aluminium Roofing This metal roofing material is best suited for coastal climates because of its outstanding resistance to salt corrosion. Being an active metal, aluminium reacts quickly with oxygen creating aluminium oxide, a layer that effectively seals the inner layers of the roofing metal from further corrosion.

Zinc Roofing Zinc can serve you for more than 10 decades thanks to its patina that heals scratches and other abuse over time. As a natural property, zinc is flexible and can easily be formed into amazing shapes and this explains its preferred usage in commercial projects. Other metal roofing materials include steel and tin. In particular, steel is available in three primary types which are galvanised steel, galvalume steel, and weathering steel.

About Me

Calling in the Contractors

Hello! My name is Andy and I have recently finished building my dream home by the ocean. I have always loved swimming and surfing in the sea so the idea of living by the beach has always appealed to me. I used to live in a small apartment but I worked hard and saved as much cash as I could. By the time I reached the age of 47, I finally had the funds to build my dream home. I called in a team of construction contractors who built my house. They were really great guys and I picked up a lot of knowledge during the months they were working with me. I will share some of the knowledge here.
